Once upon a time, deals were sealed with a handshake. Today, some still are but, as author and attorney Gary Katz explains, far too often it spells trouble. Fear not. The professional stable owner, dealer, instructor or even the owner looking to lease his or her horse can breath a little easier knowing that he or she has used a contract based on one of Katz's samples. The author, Gary Katz, besides being an attorney specializing in equine law, is also an exemplary horseman. He played polo while at Cornell University, has competed in both dressage and eventing, and was a Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. So, not only does he know the law, he knows the horse business, too. "Although there can be no guarantee that the use of these contracts will prevent future litigation, the proper and judicious use of these contracts can and will help protect your business and your assets to the maximum extent possible under the law," Katz writes. He notes that these contracts are samples only and should be tailored for each person's need and suggests that, before you actually use one, you have a lawyer look it over.
